Yes, We Can ‘Just Boost It’ – And Other Lies People Tell Me About Digital Marketing

Introduction

Ah, boosting posts. The magical solution to all your digital marketing problems, right? Just press that little blue button, throw in a few dollars, and suddenly your business is flooded with leads, sales, and undying customer loyalty.

Except… no. That’s not how it works.

Yet, time and time again, I hear people say, “Why aren’t we just boosting the post?” As if the only thing standing between them and viral success is an extra $20 and a little faith. So, let’s take a brutally honest (and slightly sarcastic) look at why ‘just boosting it’ is not the silver bullet people think it is.

1. The Myth of ‘Boosting Solves Everything’

There’s a common belief that throwing money at a post instantly transforms it into marketing gold. Bad image? Doesn’t matter. Zero engagement? No problem. No clear objective? Who cares! Just boost it, and all will be well.

Except, boosting doesn’t magically fix:

  •  Bad content – A boring post will still be boring,   just seen by more people.
  • The wrong audience – Boosting doesn’t automatically target the people who actually care.
  •  No clear objective – Engagement doesn’t equal sales, and likes don’t pay bills.

Think of boosting like handing out flyers on a busy street. If your flyer is ugly and says nothing useful, people will still ignore it—no matter how many you print.

Or better yet, it’s like ordering 100 pizzas to impress a crowd, but forgetting to check if anyone even likes pizza.

2. Why Strategy > Random Boosting

If boosting was the answer to everything, digital marketers would be out of a job. The truth? Good marketing requires strategy—not just throwing cash at a post and hoping for the best.

  • Right audience + strong content = actual results
  • A/B testing tells you what works, not guesswork
  • Analytics matter more than your gut feeling

Yet, I still get hit with, “Just boost it!”

Oh, sure. Let’s boost that blurry image with zero copy and no call-to-action. While we’re at it, let’s also shout into the void and hope it echoes back with sales.

3. The ‘Organic Reach Is Dead’ Debate

Let’s be real: organic reach isn’t what it used to be. Social platforms want you to pay for visibility. But that doesn’t mean paid ads = instant success or that organic reach is completely useless.

What works? Engagement, community-building, and actual value.

You can’t just rely on boosting a post once a week and expect long-term results. That’s like going to the gym once a month and wondering why you don’t have a six-pack yet.

4. The ‘Boost Everything’ Mindset & Budget Waste

Here’s a fun experiment: look at your boosted posts and ask, “Did this actually do anything for my business?”

If the answer is no, congratulations, you’ve just donated money to Zuckerberg’s retirement fund.

  • Boosting without a goal = budget black hole
  • Paid campaigns > mindless boosting
  • Some posts don’t need boosting, some just need better content

But sure, let’s go ahead and boost that ‘Happy International Coffee Day’ post. Because nothing says “strong marketing strategy” like hoping a random celebratory post drives actual leads.

That’s like spending thousands on a billboard in the middle of nowhere and wondering why no one calls.

5. What You Should Do Instead

So, if boosting isn’t the magical fix people think it is, what actually works?

  • Plan campaign-based advertising, not last-minute boosting
  • Use data-driven decisions, not knee-jerk reactions
  • Create strong content first, then amplify it strategically

At the end of the day, boosting is like adding salt to food. It enhances something that’s already good—but it won’t fix a bad dish.

Or, if you prefer a spicier analogy: Boosting is like putting expensive rims on a car with no engine. Looks great, still won’t get you anywhere.

So next time someone says, “Just boost it,” maybe, just maybe, we should talk about a real strategy instead.

Final Thought:

Boost smart, not blindly. And please, for the love of marketing, stop believing that a boosted post alone will change the game. It won’t.
