Why Short-Form Video Creation is Still a Mess (And How It Shouldn’t Be)

Introduction

Short-form videos are everywhere. They dominate social media, drive engagement, and push brands into the spotlight faster than ever. But behind every slick, high-energy edit is a chaotic, frustrating process that leaves video creators, project managers, and clients pulling their hair out.

If you’re a video creator, you know the drill: someone sends a vague request—“Make it pop” or “Can we add some energy?”—with little to no context. You spend hours crafting an edit, only to get a wave of conflicting feedback from five different people. Worse, revisions feel like an endless loop of guesswork, with no clear way to track what’s changed.

If you’re on the other side, requesting a video, you’re probably dealing with a different headache. The final product doesn’t quite match what you envisioned, and endless back-and-forths with the video team slow everything down.

The Real Problem? A Broken Workflow.

The issue isn’t creativity. Creators are incredibly skilled at what they do. The problem is the lack of a structured process that allows seamless collaboration between those requesting videos and those making them.

Here’s what’s broken:

  • Vague Briefs Lead to Guesswork : Creators need more than just “Make it look good.” Without clear structure, references, or an understanding of what the final product should feel like, the first version is usually a shot in the dark.
  • Feedback is a Nightmare : Notes come in scattered messages: one on email, another in a WhatsApp chat, a few in the video comment section, and some that never make it at all. Editors spend more time hunting down feedback than actually making edits.
  • Revisions Become an Endless Loop : Without a clear way to track what’s changed, video revisions often become redundant. One person asks for an edit that another person later wants reversed.
  • Lack of Version Control Creates Confusion : Clients and teams struggle to see what’s different between Version 1 and Version 5. This leads to vague statements like “I feel like the previous version was better,” with no clear reference to why.

What Needs to Change?

Short-form video creation isn’t going anywhere. In fact, as platforms push for even more content, this problem will only grow. What’s needed isn’t just better communication—it’s a collaborative system that ensures everyone is aligned before, during, and after production.

Imagine a workflow where:

  • Video briefs are structured, with clear labels, references, and expectations.
  • Feedback is timestamped and centralized, so editors don’t waste time guessing.
  • Version comparisons allow teams to track changes, eliminating revision fatigue.
  • Everyone, from the requestor to the editor, is on the same page—literally.

Collaboration Shouldn’t Be an Afterthought

If short-form videos are the future, then the way we manage them has to evolve too. Creators shouldn’t have to play detective to figure out what’s expected of them. Teams shouldn’t struggle to align on revisions. The more structured and collaborative the process, the faster and smoother great content gets made.

So, if you’re stuck in the endless loop of unclear briefs, chaotic feedback, and revision nightmares—maybe it’s not the creativity that needs fixing. Maybe it’s the system.
